I am very proud for Kiwi. He was my first dog and is an excellent stud.

I was working close to dogs for more than 10 years. I had a veterinary in Baja california "Rosarito" for some years.

I love my puppies and it is my big passion or my second family in Canada.

Puppy Mills are a huge business in Ontario and all over the world. The adult dogs are kept in tiny rabbit cages, usually in a barn, or shed, or in someone's basement. They aren't let out of the cages to play or enjoy normal dog stuff. Most of the time these dogs are fed every two days to every two weeks and lay in their own feces. Their only role is to have puppies year after year and make their owners money. So!! When purchasing a puppy from a potential "so called" breeder, always listen carefully for dogs in the background, or outside. Sometimes they have been inhumanely debarked by their owners and can only speak low grunts and growns. Inquire about the "parent" dogs if you don't see them. These people always have an excuse as to why the parents aren't around. Puppy mill owners love to meet people half way with their puppies in fear of anyone catching on to them. Sometimes they will deliver them right to your door. Don't buy a puppy unless you can purchase it at their place of residence. Insist on going to their house to buy the puppy. If we all stick together, and watch out for places like this we can put an end to the needless suffering of dogs....call the SPCA right away or call crime stoppers if you know of a puppy mill operation. There are strict laws against such abuse.

I'm very sad with puppy mills in my town I don't understand why people act in that way.

Three months ago i sold one tiny French poodle black and white for $500.

The lady made a big plea and( she was a puppy mill). She told us she lives far away from Winnipeg and asks us to deliver

We delivered. She told us the puupy is for her and she was in very good hands. Two months later i received an e- mail from a nice costumer and she told me my dog is reselling.

I find Kilo (the poodle) on kijiji. My ex puppy is now beig sold by the same girl for $1,000.

She lied in the ad because she said Kilo was very good with kids, and she was good for breeding and Tea cup.

The nature of the french poodle COULD BE around kids but they are so fragile and she was so petite for breeding (was the most petite in her family but not tea cup)

She admitted she kept the puppy in a kennel for more that 8 hours Day. she insist that she was no house trained and she was.

The only problem i see, if she have the doggy for more than 8 Hours in a kennel, were she is going to make pee? She finish with infection and she never was working y the animal shelter.

I tried very hard to get her again.

That women never had consideration of anything. she knows was me and she send me next letter

after i keep her for more than 6 months with her vaccination and give love.

It is one thing is be breeder,that is when you have almost most of the family with you at least the father and mother.

When you feed your dogs with very good food and you keep them clean happy and grooming etc, and more than that play with them and give allattention medicines, vaccination and veterinarian.

You see the puppy born and give vitamins and bathsand spend longs nights with all the puppies.

That's if they coming in good health because many come more little than the rest. or a little weak and that is when the breeder has to spend more time with those little ones, also you have to spend money on very good food for the mothe and pups. Puppy mills never do. In this way i see my puppy's grown.

Puppy mills only by for re-sales. The time that they spend waiting to be sold, the puppies suffer cruelty, no attention in cages, some times very little food and very weak.

I wanted to write that article. Its very important if you don't see the father and mother, don't buy.

This "little one", is one of the prettiest puppies. She had tricolors and beautiful personality. She was born in January and her family is too happy with her.

The Pug is a compact dog that is often described as "a lot of dog in a small space." However, despite his characteristic short and stocky body, the most distinctive feature of a Pug is his head. His large, dark orb-like eyes, flat nose and wrinkly face are the main features that distinguish Pugs from their other dog cousins.

Pugs are definitely one of the oldest dog breeds known today. It is believed this Toy breed originated in Asia sometime before 400 BC. Throughout their history Pugs have been adored by many noble people from all different royal houses of the world. That being said, they really established himself in Holland during the 16th century when he saved William (the prince) of Orange’s life by alerting him to the approach of Spaniards. This earned the Pug honorary recognition and he became the official dog of the House of Orange.

As you can see from their history, Pugs make a wonderful watchdog. They do not yap unnecessarily, but will bring the approach of strangers to the attention of their family. Although they will alert owners to strangers, they are not an aggressive dog. The Pug is very affectionate and loving and is friendly towards all. He enjoys the company of children and visitors and is happiest when he has the attention of those he loves. This breed will display jealous behaviors if ignored.

Pugs are quite intelligent and are easily trained, but they have a short attention span and will tire with

repetitive lessons. Owners should also keep in mind that these dogs are sensitive and do best with gentle yet firm teaching.

The Pug stands 12-14 inches and can weigh up to 20 pounds. His weight can easily exceed this amount if exercise and general activity is not encouraged. Pugs are lazy and will lie around if given the chance. Their inactivity makes them perfect city dogs and they are happy in apartments.

In spite of this fact, aside from becoming overweight, other health problems Pugs suffer from include skin issues (IE. dry skin) extreme sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures, allergies, and chronic breathing problems because of their flat muzzle. Despite their health issues, they live an average of 12 – 15 years. As was mentioned, they are susceptible to breathing issues and should, therefore, be provided with sufficient exercise without overdoing it. In other words, take the Pug on a few short walks a day (weather permitting) and engage him in energetic games.

The Pug is available in different coat colors including fawn, apricot, silver and black. Regardless of the color, their muzzle is always black. Their smooth short coat is easy to groom and only requires a brushing a few times per week. That being said, the Pug does need the wrinkles on his face cleaned regularly to avoid skin problems from occurring. You should also know that Pugs are heavy shedders during shedding season, and they often grunt and snore when they sleep.

Any devoted Pug owner will tell you that this pooch is a charmer that will win the heart of any dog lover.

Mixed Breed Dogs and How to Choose One

Wherever there are dogs who have not been spayed or neutered, there will be mixed breeds born at least occasionally. Dogs will do the unexpected to get together when a female dog is in heat, and even top breeders sometimes have one slip past them.

Dogs from such accidents may turn out quite well, depending on their parents. The first-generation cross of two purebred dogs of different breeds is a hybrid, and may possess superior traits in terms of health and intelligence. The “hybrid vigor” as this is called applies only to the first cross of two purebreds, though. Crossing those hybrid dogs produces unpredictability in the health and temperaments of their pups.

Breeding a hybrid or mixed breed dog is not a good idea. The ideal is to spay/neuter and enjoy life with that dog without breeding. Even if the hybrid is a great dog, the hybrid’s genetic traits are not reliably reproducible. Chances are the puppies of a hybrid or a mix will inherit weaknesses from their earlier ancestors. If you want a dog as a companion or working dog, the hybrid can be a great choice. It is the one kind of mixed breed dog you may do fine adopting as a puppy. But if you want a dog to breed on, the hybrid is not a good choice, nor is any other mixed breed.

What Breeds?

It might seem there is no breed research to do before adopting a mixed breed. The truth is it requires more research to make an informed and responsible choice of a mixed breed to adopt than to choose a purebred dog. That’s because you have two or more breeds to research, not just one.

Puppies look very much alike, so guessing the breeds in a pup of unknown parentage is often impossible. Guesses can be more educated when the dog is grown. This is an important reason to avoid adopting puppies of unknown parentage. You can’t even know what responsibilities you are taking on. What size will the dog be, what grooming will be needed, how strong, how active, how inclined to bark, how aggressive in guarding territory? A puppy of unknown genetics may grow into a dog you cannot handle.

Ask yourself whether you really want a dog or just a puppy. When you adopt a mixed breed puppy and get rid of it once it’s no longer cute, you have taken from that puppy the best chance of a permanent home. One estimate is that 50% of the puppies born in the U.S. are dead by the age of two years, and casual puppy adoption is a major reason.

Those who want puppies but aren’t sure about the long-term commitment of a dog can satisfy this interest by raising a pup to become a working dog. You just need to find a good program to work with. At around a year of age, the pup will no longer be your responsibility.

If you really do want a dog and a mix is your choice, get an adult. These dogs need homes desperately, and you can tell much more about what you are taking on. Responsible shelters don’t adopt out aggressive dogs, so if there are behavior problems, they’re likely to be problems typical of untrained dogs that age.

If you need a dog with more predictable behavior or if you want to adopt your dog as a puppy, you need to deal with a responsible breeder rather than a shelter. The most likely scenario of getting an aggressive mixed breed dog from a shelter happens when you adopt that dog as a puppy. The temperament and breeds involved in a puppy are not apparent. It is guesswork when you don’t know both parents.

For those who want to raise a mixed breed from puppyhood, the people to talk to are breeders with purebred dogs. These days, puppies can be DNA checked for paternity. Either accidentally or by plan, a dog can have a litter of puppies with more than one father. DNA testing can tell which pups are which! Cool, huh?

So, if you want a mixed pup to raise, do your breed homework! Locate breeders of breeds that interest you, and let them know of your interest. Then when an accident happens with one of their dogs or, more likely, a dog belonging to someone else they know with their breed, you can be contacted. Since the breeding won’t be planned, you’ll need to research lots of breeds, to decide what will and will not fit your situation.

Crosses of breeds are sometimes predictable as to what you might expect from the offspring. Labrador retriever and German Shepherd Dog, for example, is a common cross that tends to produce large, black dogs with short hair. The ear set can do anything—and one may do one thing while the other does something else. The dogs will likely be strong, high in energy, natural retrievers, protective of property, eager to learn, and not the right match for an owner who doesn’t want to get seriously involved in dog training!

Dogs with a terrier parent are likely to fight with other dogs of the same sex. Dogs with a parent of one of the giant breeds are likely to be large. A dog with a Chihuahua parent will probably be small. If both parents of a dog have long or short coats, the dog is likely to inherit the coat length of the parents. But when one parent has a long coat and the other a short one, the coat the pup will have is unpredictable.

Some surly-tempered dogs don’t have much energy, so their “leave me alone” attitudes are manageable. When you mix that breed with an energetic breed, the outcome can be a dog who very energetically expresses aggression. This is not good!

One mistake people make in considering temperament of a mix to adopt is expecting the dog to inherit “the best” of both breeds. More often, a mix inherits the most extreme traits of both breeds. Extreme traits are there in the first place because breeders worked long and hard over many generations to set those traits into the genetics of the breed. The traits needed for many of the jobs that humans have bred dogs to do may not be at all when you need. If you don’t do your homework, you won’t know what you’re getting into with a mix.

Another mistake is to expect that if you raise a dog with love, the dog will turn out as you desire. A dog is the victim of instinct, with less higher brain function than a human. As a result, there is a great deal about a dog that you simply cannot overcome with rearing or training because the dog’s higher brain function simply is not powerful enough to overcome the impulses. Bad handling can make a temperament much worse than it would otherwise have been, but even the best handling cannot rise above the limitations of the dog’s genetics. Do that homework!

Some foods which are edible for humans, and even other species of animals, can pose hazards for dogs because of their different metabolism. Some may cause only mild digestive upsets, whereas, others can cause severe illness, and even death. The following common food items should not be fed (intentionally or unintentionally) to dogs. This list is, of course, incomplete because we can not possibly list everything your dog should not eat.

Items to avoid	Reasons to avoid
Alcoholic beverages	Can cause intoxication, coma, and death.
Baby food	Can contain onion powder, which can be toxic to dogs. (Please see onion below.) Can also result in nutritional deficiencies, if fed in large amounts.
Bones from fish, poultry, or other meat sources	Can cause obstruction or laceration of the digestive system.
Cat food	Generally too high in protein and fats.
Chocolate, coffee, tea, and other caffeine	Contain caffeine, theobromine, or theophylline, which can be toxic and affect the heart and nervous systems.
Citrus oil extracts	Can cause vomiting.
Fat trimmings	Can cause pancreatitis.
Grapes and raisins	Contain an unknown toxin, which can damage the kidneys. There have been no problems associated with grape seed extract.
Hops	Unknown compound causes panting, increased heart rate, elevated temperature, seizures, and death.
Human vitamin supplements containing iron	Can damage the lining of the digestive system and be toxic to the other organs including the liver and kidneys.
Large amounts of liver	Can cause Vitamin A toxicity, which affects muscles and bones.
Macadamia nuts	Contain an unknown toxin, which can affect the digestive and nervous systems and muscle.
Marijuana	Can depress the nervous system, cause vomiting, and changes in the heart rate.
Milk and other dairy products	Some adult dogs and cats do not have sufficient amounts of the enzyme lactase, which breaks down the lactose in milk. This can result in diarrhea. Lactose-free milk products are available for pets.
Moldy or spoiled food, garbage	Can contain multiple toxins causing vomiting and diarrhea and can also affect other organs.
Mushrooms	Can contain toxins, which may affect multiple systems in the body, cause shock, and result in death.
Onions and garlic (raw, cooked, or powder)	Contain sulfoxides and disulfides, which can damage red blood cells and cause anemia. Cats are more susceptible than dogs. Garlic is less toxic than onions.
Persimmons	Seeds can cause intestinal obstruction and enteritis.
Pits from peaches and plums	Can cause obstruction of the digestive tract.
Potato, rhubarb, and tomato leaves; potato and tomato stems	Contain oxalates, which can affect the digestive, nervous, and urinary systems. This is more of a problem in livestock.
Raw eggs	Contain an enzyme called avidin, which decreases the absorption of biotin (a B vitamin). This can lead to skin and hair coat problems. Raw eggs may also contain Salmonella.
Raw fish	Can result in a thiamine (a B vitamin) deficiency leading to loss of appetite, seizures, and in severe cases, death. More common if raw fish is fed regularly.
Salt	If eaten in large quantities it may lead to electrolyte imbalances.
String	Can become trapped in the digestive system; called a "string foreign body."
Sugary foods	Can lead to obesity, dental problems, and possibly diabetes mellitus.
Table scraps (in large amounts)	Table scraps are not nutritionally balanced. They should never be more than 10% of the diet. Fat should be trimmed from meat; bones should not be fed.
Tobacco	Contains nicotine, which affects the digestive and nervous systems. Can result in rapid heart beat, collapse, coma, and death.
Yeast dough	Can expand and produce gas in the digestive system, causing pain and possible rupture of the stomach or intestines.

Before you buy a Dog

Your new puppy wants to please you. Its your job to teach it what’s expected and reward it for good behavior. There are three factors: its ability to control its bowels and bladder, its sense of home and toilet areas, and how to communicate what is acceptable behavior for your pet.

Females are generally easier to train than males. They don’t lift their legs to urinate on shrubs and objects to mark territory. Female urine creates problems if the dog is “IN HEAT”, as this condition attracts male dogs. When the female urinates, she is generally done. When the male urinates, he does so a little at a time so he can mark numerous areas.

Larger breeds are generally easier to train than smaller breeds. Hounds are notoriously slow to housebreak, while working and sporting breeds are easier, as they have a strong desire to please.

It’s important to have realistic expectations. The animal is taken to a new home, surrounded by strange new smells, people, and places. It needs time to adjust to your home, a new diet, and the stress of moving.

Scents left behind by a previous dog may cause the new puppy to relieve himself.

Plan to get a new puppy when you have time to play and work with it. Before bringing a new puppy home, prepare a small pen or enclosure. The Kitchen is a good choice, as this is an active place and helps the puppy from feeling isolated, and it has floors which are usually easy to clean. Kitchens may have an outside door which help to quickly move the animal to the “outdoors” if nature calls.

Puppies are trained by their mothers to use non nest areas to relieve themselves. Learning where its all right to go is accomplished by experience and practice. Training is best done by clear, consistent, and persistent communications between the owner and the dog.

Puppies generally respect their sleeping areas and won’t relieve themselves in their bed or nest and then sleep in it. A pup might make a mistake the first night, but not likely on the second.

A sleeping box, carriers are ideal, with a door or lid and adequate ventilation should be provided. The box should only be large to turn around in, stretch, or stand up in. A larger carrier allows the pup to relieve itself in one end of the box and sleep in the other, defeating your training.

Close confinement is the quickest method to teach the animal proper habits. If it has the”run of the house”, it learns to soil floors and carpets -- habits that will have to be dealt with, in addition to housebreaking. If you play often with the pup in his confined area and spend time with him when outside to eliminate, he wont suffer from confinement. A period of up to two weeks of housebreaking and close supervision beats years of frustration if lessons aren’t learned.

If the pup is at least 10 to 12 weeks old, begin training immediately when you arrive home. Develop a routine that allows the pup to please you, while learning acceptable behavior. A pup can voluntary void at 4 to 6 weeks of age, however at less than 4 months of age it cannot physically control waste functions for more than a few hours at a time. Eight weeks is about the youngest any puppy will begin to respond to housetraining. Each pup will have its own abilities ==some may train earlier and some later than four months of age. Expect mistakes at first, as pups can”t go very long between toilet trips.

Limit water, provide it three to five times a day. After every meal take the puppy outside for a walk until he relieves himself. Make sure its in the right place at the right time. Be consistent -- Even if the weather is bad, keep the routine of feeding on time and then take the dog outside to relieve himself. Inconsistency will confuse the pup and lengthen the period of training. Young puppies need food three or four times a day.

Take him outside first thing in the morning, after every meal, just before bedtime, and after mid day naps. Trips outside are warranted after periods of excitement or exercise. If he starts sniffing the floor, circling as if trying to squat, if he becomes restless, or if he appears to be looking for a place to do his work. Stay outside until you are sure he has eliminated When the dog responds correctly be sure to give it lavish praise.

It’s important to designate a particular area for the animal to relieve itself. Pick a secluded area of the garden and mark it with a rag or paper towel you used to clean up an inside mistake. The pup will notice the smell, think he used the area before, and probably get the idea of what’s supposed to happen next. Take the puppy to a different “usable” area of the yard so it doesn’t become fixed on one spot and refuse to urinate anywhere else. Let him know its all right to relieve himself wherever you lead him.

Be Consistent = Try to feed every day at the same times. This helps the puppy know what to expect. As he grows older he will be able to contain himself for longer periods and outings can be reduced to about four a day, but let him work slowly up to that goal. Remember small puppies need 4 feeds a day

Punishing a very young puppy is no more reasonable than it would be for a baby in diapers. Scold him and he’ll probably forget about it by the next time he has to go. Try and housebreak by prevention -- teach good manners, while not giving the pup a chance to form bad habits.

It’s absurd to rub a pup’s nose in his feces or urine in an attempt to discipline him. The puppy’s nose didn’t create the mess. It’s useless to strike the animal as punishment, as this only upsets the animal and makes it far more likely to recreate the problem.

When mistakes occur, clean up immediately. On uncarpeted floors blot up as much moisture as possible with paper towels or rags (save the rag for a scent mark for outside use), wash the spot with soap and water, wipe with a solution of one cup white vinegar to 2 cups water, then with clear water. Work from the outside towards the centre. Spray with an odor neutralizer (available at most pet stores) to remove the odor and reduce the chance the animal will return to the same spot.

On carpets or rugs, blot up as much as possible, wash with soap and water, rinse thoroughly, then wash with one cup vinegar in 5 cups water. Follow with clear, water rinses, blot again, and spray with an odor neutralizer.

Disciplining a puppy after the event has happened is almost always a waste of time, as it forgets its association with the mess. Low level disapproval, such as “What did you do? Bad Dog Bad Boy!” is all that’s needed if he acts guilty. Take the dog immediately to the designated toilet area and remember to reward the animal for correct actions.

If you leave the animal, confine it. Exercise Pens are great. As soon as you get home, take it outside until it “performs correctly and give lots of praise. When you are home, keep the pup in view. An unsupervised pup is likely to have an accident. Housebreaking takes from 4 days to 2 weeks.

Don’t give food or water within 2 -3 hrs of bedtime. A high quality, low bulk, dry food diet will help produce smaller, less frequent, and more reliable bowel movements. Super-premium feeds are low in added salt, which decreases the need for extra water and later urination. Lower quality feeds normally have higher salt levels and increased thirst, with additional water intake and urination.

This is an exercise pen, ideal in a home where you want your puppy to remain in one area, it makes house training much easier when you have a pen, its also ideal for putting your pup out on the lawn and keeping him safe if you dont want him on a leash. Inside the pen goes his bed or crate, pee pad, food and water and toys.

There are several things that you should have on hand for your new puppy. It is best to be prepared. Below is a list of items to have on hand, and some things to do that may help you get ready for your new addition:

1. SAFE AREA: Either a baby or puppy playpen or baby gate to partition a small area. It should be large enough to hold a little bed, a play area, small dish for food and water, with enough room left over to relieve themselves if necessary. Puppies can get into lot's of trouble if they are left unsupervised, so it is necessary to put them in a playpen or other small confined area to keep them safe. This is just a temporary place until the puppy is older and doesn't need quite so much sleep, less mischievous and hopefully housebroken!

2. PUPPY PROOF YOUR HOUSE: Just as you would for a child or baby! You need to move all houseplants, electrical cords, household cleaning supplies, or anything else dangerous near floor level that a small puppy could possible chew on or be harmed by.

3. FOOD: It is best to find out ahead of time what brand of dog food that your puppy has been on, so that you may have a bag ready for them. It is best to keep your puppy on the same diet that it is used to so that it will not be subjected to too many changes at once. Changing to a different food can cause an upset stomach or diarrhea. Any switch in diet should be done gradually by mixing the old food with the new food.

4. NUTRI-CAL: This high calorie dietary supplement in a tube (looks like a tube of toothpaste) is a must have if you are bringing home a tiny toy or teacup size dog. It will help keep a tiny dog or puppy from going into hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). It is also a great source of extra vitamins for any size puppy. It will insure that your puppy is getting some good nutrition while it adjusts to it's new home. A small amount should be given every 6-8 hours for the first 7 days, or until your tiny puppy is settled in and eating well.

4. BOTTLED WATER: You will want to give your puppy bottled water for a few days. Start with pure bottled water and gradually mix in your own water over several days time. Water in different places sometimes vary greatly in the amount of minerals and/or chemicals that they use to purify it with and a big change can sometimes cause stomach trouble or loose stools.

5. CHEW TOYS: It is a good idea to have on hand several types of toys and chew toys to help keep your puppy amused and away from things he shouldn't chew on. Young puppies seem to especially like soft stuffed toys to chew on and sleep with. Dogs have a very keen sense of smell, so we always send a soft toy that smells like our home and siblings along with our puppies when they leave. This seems to help their adjustment, and many people say that years later, this is still their dogs favorite toy. It is also a good idea to give your puppy some harder teething bones or toys too. But remember to only purchase toys that are safe for puppies!

6. BEDDING: A small box or washable plastic surface with a baby blanket in it is usually the best type of bed for your puppy at first. These can be easily cleaned and the blankets thrown in the wash in case of accidents. Many puppies are very clean and would never soil in their bed. But most are too young to know the difference between their bed and any other potty spot and can make quite a mess! Cushy foam beds look adorable, but are best bought after your puppy is housebroken and done teething. It is amazing how one little foam bed can generate so much mess when chewed into a thousand pieces by busy teeth! Also stay away from wicker beds, as wicker will splinter when chewed on and can become lethal to a puppy if swallowed.

7. PUPPY PADS: Puppy pads or " Wee wee" pads are good to have on hand for your puppy to relieve themselves on. Since puppies should be kept away from other dogs, and from parks or grass that other dogs have been around until they have finished all their shots (4 months of age), many people are choosing to litter box train their small pups. Most puppies we place have already been started on newspaper training. To litter box train, it is usually easiest to start with a litter box lined with newspaper or piddle pads.

8. BOWLS: You will need a shallow food bowl and a semi-shallow water bowl for your puppy. Do not use a bowl that is deep, especially for water, because it is possible for a small puppy to fall in or even drown. Also they cannot reach if the water or food level gets too low.

What is Hypoglycemia?

Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) occurs mainly in toy breeds between six and twelve weeks of age. Often it is precipitated by stress. The first sign are those of listlessness, wobbling, glassy eyed, depression and vomiting. They are followed by muscular weakness, tremors (especially in the facial muscles) and later convulsions, coma and death. The entire sequence is not always seen, the dog may appear to be depressed or may be weak, wobbly and jerky; or the puppy may be found in a coma. Hypoglycemia can occur without warning when a puppy is placed in a new home or while being shipped. It might appear after puppy missed a meal, chills, becomes exhausted from too much playing or has a digestive upset. These upset's place an added strain on the energy reserves of the liver and bring on symptoms (if the dog is susceptible).

Treatment

Treatment is directed at restoring blood sugar levels of glucose. Begin at once. Prolong or repeated attacks can cause permanent damage to the brain. If puppy is unconscious, place a dab, about 1/4" of NutriCal on their tongue and hold their mouth closed for 1 minute. Use ONLY NurtriCal. The sugar in this product will enter the blood stream through the veins in the mouth. Wrap the puppy in a warm blanket and immediately take to the nearest vet or an after hours emergency veterinarian hospital where an intravenous solution of dextrose can be started. If the puppy is conscious, give 1/2" to 1" (a teaspoonful) of NutriCal. ONLY If puppy is conscious and If NutriCal is not available, give cane syrup, karo syrup or sugar in water....these must be swallowed. Do not give honey. Use an eye dropper or syringe plunger if puppy will not drink voluntarily. You should begin to see improvement in 10 minutes. After your puppy feels a little better, remember to give him/her a protein based meal (any good meat based dog food or meat baby food will do), to level out it's blood sugar. If they don't feel like eating, give them something extra tasty to make sure that they get food in their stomach.

Preventing recurrent attacks

Feed puppy a high quality kibble diet. I like lamb or chicken as it is easier for them to digest. If your puppy isn't eating dry food, a good quality canned puppy food would be suggested. See that puppy eats at least every 4 hours. If puppy skips a meal, give 1 tsp or 1" of Nutri-Cal in place of meal. Offer 1/4c whole milk a couple of times a day between meals. Do not let your puppy become chilled or overtired. Provide a quite area for naps throughout the day. Decrease your playtime with the puppy. Their bodies are very small and use up their energy supply rapidly. This can cause sugar depletion or stress induced coccidia. Start giving him 1/2" NutriCal several times a day right after meals for another week.

Anytime you have to take your puppy to a vet for other than routine exams, I ask that you please call and tell me what is going on. I am not a vet, but I have been watching every move your puppy has made since birth and there is a good chance I can help.

Shitzu puppies are very active and they burn calories quickly. Their initial growth phase is during the first six months of life, although theoretically they are still puppies until eight to twelve months of age, or when they reach puberty.

While your shitzu is still a puppy, he should be fed at least four times a day because he has a small stomach and a high metabolism. As he gets older and his growth and development slow down, you can decrease the feedings to three meals, and later two meals a day. Be sure to consult your veterinarian to be certain this feeding schedule matches your shitzu’s needs.

Unless your shitzu is a very active dog, he probably will not require more than one to two meals a day when he is an adult. Ideally the meals should be provided at twelve-hour intervals, or if only one meal is provided, in the early evening, after he has exercised and before bedtime. If all of the food has not been eaten after twenty minutes, remove it. An after dinner stroll before bedtime will help your shitzu sleep more comfortably.

Due to the fact that Shih Tzus are small dogs and they are relatively inactive indoors, they make fantastic apartment dogs and wonderful dogs for seniors. Furthermore, the Shih Tzu is an ideal dog for anyone who has allergies as his coat does not shed. Of course, the down side to most non shedding dog is the required daily grooming of their coat – the Shih Tzu is no exception.

The Shihs coat is available in almost every color and bi-color combination. If kept long, the coat will need to be brushed a few times a day to keep it free from mats. His eyes will need to be cleaned to discourage the build up of discharge that can lead to eye infections. The owner will also need to make sure the hair on top of the Shih Tzus head is kept tied up and out of the dog’s eyes to avoid aggravating them. The Shih Tzu should have a bath every month, and should be trimmed every few months to keep the desired look.

As with any pet, owning a dog is a huge commitment that must be met for the entire life of a dog. The average lifespan of a Shih Tzu is 15 years or more. The new breed must also have predictable characteristics and fulfill a specific purpose, said Daisy Okas, a spokesman for the AKC, based in New York City. Breeds classified in the "Toy Group" category, for example, were developed to be small, charming companions. So a low-allergy buddy doesn't seem so far fetched.

The AKC currently recognizes 150 breeds; the Labradoodle is a work in progress, and is not yet a recognized breed in the U.S. or Australia.

Los cuidados
El cepillado es diario y se realiza en capas, comenzando por la capa interna, se hace con peine de acero y nunca con cardina ni cepillos. L
Luego del cepillado el pelo se ata primero sobre la cabeza para mantener despejados sus ojjos, y ademas salvaguardar la salud del pelo de su "mechon", tambien se atan los bigotes a cada lado de su boca, se coloca una atadura en la base de la coleta que se hace y otro al medio para que no se ensucie de comida y para que no roce el piso que produce desgaste y no lo deja crecer.
Luego no se deja jamás al perro vivir en patio de tierra o de piso de cemento, los perros de show en esta raza pasan la mayor cantidad de tiempo en caniles con piso ceramicos, o en jaulas con piso de rejilla para que el pelo con el roce del piso solido no limite su crecimiento.
El baño se hace cada 3 días, cepillando antes durante y despues del baño, secando siempre con secador de pelo luego de la toalla y cepillando mientras tanto como si le harias el brushing.
Ultimo el pelo de un shithzu de competicion no se corta jamás desde que nace, salvo algunos pequeños retoques para dar forma, pero nunca eliminando largo o pelandolo en verano, pues ya no se recupera la misma calidad ni cnatidad de pelo.
Solo se usan productos para baño para perros, y las gomitas que se utilizan para atar su pelo son similares a las que se utilizan en humanos cuando se realizan multiples trenzitas de pequeño tamaño en toda la cabeza. Si no las consigues un buen sustituto es cortar los dedos de guantes descartables de cirugia para formar las gomitas para el pelo, estas no dañan ni cortajean el pelo del perro.

Este cuentito fue sacado de una compilación llamada "26 Cuentos para Pensar." Se los dejo para que le echen una mirada, lo que es yo, lo encontré precioso.

"Esta es la historia de un hombre al que yo definiría como buscador. Un buscador es alguien que busca. No necesariamente es alguien que encuentra. Tampoco es alguien que sabe lo que está buscando. Es simplemente para quien su vida es una búsqueda.

Un día un buscador sintió que debía ir hacia la ciudad de Kammir. Él había aprendido a hacer caso riguroso a esas sensaciones que venían de un lugar desconocido de sí mismo, así que dejó todo y partió. Después de dos días de marcha por los polvorientos caminos divisó Kammir, a lo lejos. Un poco antes de llegar al pueblo, una colina a la derecha del sendero le llamó la atención. Estaba tapizada de un verde maravilloso y había un montón de árboles, pájaros y flores encantadoras. La rodeaba por completo una especie de valla pequeña de madera lustrada … Una portezuela de bronce lo invitaba a entrar.

De pronto sintió que olvidaba el pueblo y sucumbió ante la tentación de descansar por un momento en ese lugar. El buscador traspaso el portal y empezó a caminar lentamente entre las piedras blancas que estaban distribuidas como al azar, entre los árboles. Se sobrecogió un poco al darse cuenta de que esa piedra no era simplemente una piedra. Era una lápida, sintió pena al pensar que un niño de tan corta edad estaba enterrado en ese lugar…

Mirando a su alrededor, el hombre se dio cuenta de que la piedra de al lado, también tenía una inscripción, se acercó a leerla decía “Llamar Kalib, vivió 5 años, 8 meses y 3 semanas”. El buscador se sintió terrible mente conmocionado. Este hermoso lugar, era un cementerio y cada piedra una lápida. Todas tenían inscripciones similares: un nombre y el tiempo de vida exacto del muerto, pero lo que lo contactó con el espanto, fue comprobar que, el que más tiempo había vivido, apenas sobrepasaba 11 años. Embargado por un dolor terrible, se sentó y se puso a llorar.
El cuidador del cementerio pasaba por ahí y se acercó, lo miró llorar por un rato en silencio y luego le preguntó si lloraba por algún familiar. - No ningún familiar – dijo el buscador - ¿Qué pasa con este pueblo?, ¿Qué cosa tan terrible hay en esta ciudad? ¿Por qué tantos niños muertos enterrados en este lugar? ¿Cuál es la horrible maldición que pesa sobre esta gente, que lo ha obligado a construir un cementerio de chicos?.

El anciano sonrió y dijo: -Puede usted serenarse, no hay tal maldición, lo que pasa es que aquí tenemos una vieja costumbre. Necesitan un Hogar nuevo y responsable!

No siempre tenemos la suerte de nuestro lado existen ocaciones en que se trabaja muy duro y no existe recompensa alguna, y todo el sacrifio y cuidados intensivos para las crias, suele ser inutiles.

Hace 2 anos mi perrita Mia tuvo una camada de 4" Imperial Shih tzus" quisas los mas puros que hemos tenidos, pues toda su desendecia son Imperial shih tzus.

Nace" Billy el bello" entre tres hermanitas(os).
dos de ellos se fueron con personas dedicadas por completo a su casa y a cuidar y ser responsables de la mascotita que adquirieron.
Una de ellas su mama era enfermera, y los otros una pareja grande que ya no tenia hijos.
Pero la mala suerte llego a Billy un pequeno con 8 semanas le pusimos "el bello". Hubieron personas interesadas en billy.Pero prestamos a tencion a
su nueva familia acompanada por dos ninos quizas de 11 a12 anos como unos diablillos,
No queremos aveces hacer sentir mal a nadie o tratar de discriminar ninos o adultos, queremos llevar felicidad a todas las casas, pero en esta ocacion. murio al 4to dia. porque sus padres trabajaban todo el tiempo, y quicieron hacerlos responsables del cachorrito. y no lo dejaban dormir o tomar la suficiente agua que necesitaba. Mure Billy de desidratacion y mal manejo.
Esa experiencia fue muy fuerte para quienes lo cuidamos con amor .Ahora prefiero recomendar a los ninos otro tipo de entretenimiento pues la mascota no son juguetes. .

Muchos toman desiciones de comprar un perrito, y no toman las debidas consideraciones No es solo la responsabilidad...

sino los gastos y la atención que significan tener un acompañante más en la familia. Porque no es sólo tenerlo en casa y darle agua y comida, sino apreciar su compañía y estar atento a su salud llevándolo al veterinario siempre que sea necesario.

La clave para crear una mascota verdaderamente familiar --que sea dócil, leal y que se lleve bien con las personas y otros animales en la casa, si los hay-- es simplemente tratar al animal como otro miembro más de la familia --que en realidad lo es-- y proveer el entrenamiento y cuidado que merece. No es suficiente obtener una mascota ''para los muchachos'', sugiere la Sociedad Protectora de Animales de EE.UU. (HSUS). ``Una mascota no es un juguete para los niños, sino un miembro vitalicio de la familia que depende enteramente de ella, especialmente de los adultos''.

Aunque las mascotas son parte de la vida de muchos niños, la HSUS y otros expertos recomiendan que el niño tenga al menos siete años antes de traer un animalito a casa ya que de menos edad no tiene la madurez necesaria para controlar sus impulsos, o saber la forma adecuada de tratar o cuidar una mascota.

Conoce muy bien las necesidades de cada perrioy su deseo empezo desde nina desde que abrimos una veterinariay empezo ayudar a curar animales. Aqui me quito el sombrero con kiwi, es tan entusiasta y siempre anda de muy buen humor es un perrito que proteje a suDuena (que soy yo) asus crias y su gran familia.Kiwi es un machito de color tricolor , que los tres colores me hacen recordar alas avellanas. Es un gran perro de compania super juguetones y muy querendones
se me hacen muy semejantes con el Lhasa Apso, con el cual se ha cruzado en ciertas ocasiones, pero se distingue de esta otra raza por tener el hocico más corto y alto. Su promedio de vida es de doce a catorce años. Debido a su largo y poblado pelaje necesita unos cuidados especiales. Su fácil adiestramiento es una gran ventaja, como también el hecho de que le gusten los niños y otros animales, que sea amigable e inteligente y un gran perro de compañía.

Origen: El origen de esta raza pequeña, proviene del Tíbet y China. Se cree que el Lhasa Apso y el pekinés, son algunos de sus ancestros. Llego aterrada. pero tan pronto llego a su destino mi casa, se idetifico con los que serian su Familia y hermanitos.

los tres han cumplido su mission de crecer saludables y juguetones.
los tres encontraron caminos distintos con buenas personas. el Maltecito cruza con Shih tzu lo hace mas tierno e inteligente aunque para muchos no es legitimo.
pero ya estan reconociendo esta raza de perros. como designer dogs, que son perritos de buena raza ambos.

Estas perritas preciosas con cara de ositas son parte de la familia de kiwi
chika y mia han tenido bellos kiwitos shitzus. Gia es muy pequena aun y es solterita. Aunque ellos requieren de una buena alimentacion para que crecan sanos fuertes y sus crias no mueran por desnutricion. especialmente cuando esperan amas de 3 cachorros.

Nutrición en el cachorro

No hay duda de que una buena alimentación pasa por no alimentar con comida casera y aportar un alimento específico. Pero no todos los cachorros deben alimentarse por igual. Las diferencias entre las razas se observan desde el nacimiento. Por ejemplo, una perra Caniche pare entre 1 y 3 cachorros que pesan de 150 a 200 g cada uno, mientras que el peso de nacimiento de los 8 a 12 cachorros de una camada de Terranova oscila entre 600 y 700 g. Aun cuando un perro adulto de raza gigante pesa 25 veces más que un perro de raza pequeña, la relación de los pesos al nacer oscila sólo entre 1 y 6. Por lo tanto, el camino que se recorre durante el crecimiento es muy diferente de una raza a otra. La amplitud y la duración del crecimiento son proporcionales al peso final del perro.

Un cachorro de raza pequeña alcanza la mitad del peso adulto se hacia los 3 meses de edad y uno de raza grande, no antes de los 5 ó 6 meses.

Un cachorro tiene necesidades de energía, proteínas, minerales y vitaminas mucho más importantes que las de un perro adulto. Digiere con más dificultad el almidón que un perro adulto. pako nos deja despues de su nacimiento y de crecer muy activo y muy fuerte.se va con una familia de Ontario,canada a su nuevo hogar.
Donde disfrutara estar con los ninos de ese hogar y su mission sera hacerlos felices.a un que se le presentara un gran reto conocer al perro viejo de esa casa.

Como Presentar su Nuevo Cachorro a su Perro más Viejo

Si Ud. tiene un perro que ya lleva varios años con ud. y desea tener en casa otro nuevo cachorro, debe saber que, un perro nuevo es una amenaza en potencia para el territorio del animal ya establecido.

Es por esta razón que todo dependerá de usted al momento de presentarlos, de las actitudes que tome respecto al nuevo huésped dependerá la feliz convivencia.

En primer lugar usted debe manejar la situación como si se tratara de la llegada de un hermanito.

Así como el bebé nunca saltaría sobre el hermano mayor no deberá dejar que el cachorro o el recién llegado salte sobre el más antiguo, éste podrá encontrarlo desagradable y provocativo.

Busque el encuentro cuando ambos perros estén tranquilos y relajados, y recompense al antiguo por su obediencia delante del recién arribado.

Dele de comer a los dos en la mismo habitación de la casa, procurando que no haya contacto visual entre ellos.

Procúrele a cada perro su propia cama, situada en un rincón privado.

Siga premiando primero al perro más antiguo de la casa y no intente cambiar sus rutinas ajustándolas a las del novato.

Para mi amigos y los que leen mi blog tengo una pagina nueva acerca de los perrito Shih tzus. y sus caracteristicas, y acerca de mi trabajo como Breeder o creadora de ellos, en los ultimos anos me especializado en ellos y sus cuidados. Dedico esta paguina a todos los que aman a sus perritos y alos puppy lover's.
y para contestar dudas, hablaremos de todo un trabajo con amor y como hemos crecido como creadores de Shih tzus

los shi tzu son unos perros de los mas adorable,son pequeños y muy juguetones NO SE CANSAN NUNCA (bueno "Mia" si por q la pobre quedo con un poco de sobre peso en su ultima camada).

Mediran unos 30 centimetros y su peso es de 4 a 6 kilos.
Sus origenes son chinos,antiguamente todos los monarcas y gente de gran categoria tenian uno pues se les consideraban animales sagrados, incluso tenian un sitio junto a ellos a la hora de comer.Pensaban q estos lindos perritos eran la recarnacion de algun familiar y tan grande era la creencia q intentaron impedir q el shi tzu saliera de su pais y hubo una epoca en la que el animalito era envenenado al morir su dueñosegun los Chinos.

Los Shi tzu son unos perros muy alegres y cariñosos,sus ojos son enormes y en ellos se puede ver la felicidad q etos animalitos irraden eso si hay que cuidarselos porque al ser tan grandes corren peligro meses perdio la vista de es aconsejable hacer al perro una coleta si le llebas con el pelo largo. Tienen una gran cantidad de pelaje y estan monos tanto con el largo como corto.

Los shi tzu frecuentemente son presentados a concursos y no es dificil q los ganen gracias a su belleza ademas suelen aprender rapido pues por lo general son perros muy inteligentes.

El fundador de una Gran Familia de Kiwis.

Kiwi nace en un pueblo al sur de manitoba llamado Ronald. en Canada. el dia 25 de Febrero del 2007.
Recuerdo que era una bolita de peluche con unos bellos ojos grande, Cuando sus ex- amigos lo traian en un gran hotel en winnipeg, sentado muy propiamende esperando que algo sucediera, pues son perritos que captan inmediatamente el misterio los .Shih Tzu Su caracteristico pelaje distingue a estos pequeños, antaño reservados a los emperadores chinos.
Finalmente entre tanta gente que salia y entraba al hotel, sabia que yo seri su destino. y el mi perrito y mi gran companero.

El companero ideal El Shih Tzu es una raza de perros sumamente antigua (los primeros datos encontrados sobre ellos datan del año 1.000 a. C.)

descendiendo del origen tibetano. La historia del "perro león" tibetano está entrelazada con la doctrina del Budismo, el cual tiene su origen en India. El león fue estrechamente asociado con el Budismo, pero el león no fue natural de China, por esto el chino y el Lamas tibetano criaron a sus perros para que se asemejen a los leones. El Shih Tzu (cuyo nombre significa león), pudo haber sido la variedad más antigua y pequeña de los "perros sagrados" y tiene alguna similitud con otras razas tibetanas. Por mucho de la larga e ilustre historia de China, la crianza del pequeño "perro león" fue un pasatiempo favorito de los gobernantes imperiales.

Antes del año 624 D.C., documentos muestran que estos pequeños perros fueron exportados de Malta, Turquía, Grecia y Persia, como regalo al dominio de los emperadores chinos. Se cree que el primer perro león del Tibet, del cual problablemente el Shih Tzu descendió, vino a China durante la dinastía Qing (Ch'ing) como tributo del Gran Lamas al orden del Imperio Chino.

Durante 1920 el primer par de Shih Tzu (pronunciado Shid Zoo) fue llevado a Inglaterra. Más importaciones siguieron, y la raza llegó a estar bien establecida allí. Su popularidad se propagó al continente europeo y a Norteamérica, donde éste actualmente goza de un tremendo seguimiento.

Clasificada como una raza "juguete" en USA, es un raza elegante y de pelo largo, todos los colores son aceptados, negro, negro y blanco, gris y blanco, oro y blanco, etc. Un resplandor blanco en la frente y el extremo blanco en la cola es apreciado. El cepillado diario es esencial, requiere cuidado y atención.

La característica mas fuerte del Shih Tzu es su personalidad. Ellos son divertidos y cariñosos, para nada agresivos y un excelente compañero para niños y adultos. Es alerta, vivaz y disfruta de un buen paseo. Puede jugar por horas y no habrá día en que estos juguetones no lo haga reir. Aman mas que nada la compañia y el afecto de la gente. Son felices entreteniendo a cualquier extraño y conceden su afecto a la persona mas cercana.

Son grandiosos con los niños. Jugarán con ellos por horas y la pregunta es: ¿Quiénes se cansarán primero, los niños o el perro?

En conclusión es un gran animal doméstico. Asi que si busca un amigo especial, no lo dudes, busque a un criador y adopte un cachorro Shih Tzu.
